The Houston Astros were relatively quiet this past offseason after capturing their second World Series title.

However, the additions that they made were quite impactful, especially the signing of veteran first baseman and slugger Jose Abreu.

The Astros signed him to a three-year contract to replace the departed Yuli Gurriel.

The 36-year-old hit for a .304 average with 15 home runs in 2022 with the Chicago White Sox.

His veteran presence has certainly been felt at Astros camp this spring, as several players have benefitted from having him around.

On Thursday, Astros writer Chandler Rome spoke with MLB Network’s Christopher Russo and discussed Abreu’s impact.

Rome discussed Abreu’s first meeting with Astros owner Jim Crane.

The night before the slugger’s introductory press conference, Abreu and Crane had a dinner together.

At that dinner, Abreu pulled out his phone and revealed that he already had all the phone numbers of his new teammates.

Rome says that Crane was duly impressed by Abreu’s initiative and willingness to adapt to his environment.

Rome also talked about Abreu’s impact on Yordan Alvarez.

Alvarez leaned heavily on Gurriel before the latter’s departure, but Rome says that Alvarez has soaked up plenty of knowledge from Abreu as he prepares for the 2023 season.

Abreu appears to be fitting in quite well with his new Astros teammates and is already very close with several of them.

Rome then spoke about Abreu’s work ethic and how it sets an example for the younger players in the Astros clubhouse.

The slugger should be a key addition for the Astros as they look to defend their title.
