The Dallas Mavericks are in very bad shape right now and everyone is trying to figure out what’s gone wrong with them.

Since their move to add Kyrie Irving in February was such a big one, that is what most people are focusing on.

And Irving is receiving a lot of criticism regarding the team’s fall from grace.

NBA analyst Colin Cowherd didn’t have many kind words for Irving and his style of play on Thursday.

After calling him an “atrocious defender” and “terrible leader,” Cowherd stated that Irving is a “great scorer, not a great player.”

“He’s perfect for pickup basketball. You play with him for an hour, he gets you a bucket and you go your separate ways,” he said.

Throughout his career, Irving has heard many comments like this.

There have been plenty of people who have said that he’s not a true team player.

They claim he doesn’t have leadership skills and is a great shooter but not someone who can be called an all-time great player.

Others would argue that Irving is one of the smartest players in the league.

They say he has the sort of forethought and intelligence that can lead a team to victory.

If the Mavericks don’t make the playoffs, there will be many more statements like this one from Cowherd.

While it’s not entirely his fault, the team has definitely fallen off since Irving joined.

The front office will have to decide what they want to do with Irving if things don’t come together over the next five games.

Do they double down and sign him to an extension, or let him go?
