I absolutely detest the current review system

While i understand some of the intentions to improve on the previous numeric review/rating system, I found the current one unusable after 2 years of implementation. It is confusing to skim through, hard to grasp the reviewers' point, and most importantly, discouraging to watch any anime upon reading the reviews.

I would much rather go back to the previous system, perhaps we can keep the emoji reactions to the reviews... but that's about all I think we should keep.

Can you be more specific? I'm using this show for the sake of reference:

https://myanimelist.net/anime/8917/Mouretsu_Pirates/reviews

For reference here's the same page with the old system:

archive.org link

The stuff that hasn't changed is that you see how many eps they were up to when they reviewed it, the review date, and see the start of the review, and a "Read More" button.

What's changed is mainly "Recommended" instead of 7-10, "Mixed Feelings" instead of 5-6, and "Not Recommended" instead of 1-4.

If I made any one change at this point it would be to add "Highly Recommended" for 9-10.

The layout of the information might be an issue, it was more neat and compact before. It's possibly something a user-script could actually fix, if you're interested.

...

If the reviews on this show are confusing and make you not watch to watch the show, then that's not to do with the new review system, as these are from 2012. So can you clarify if there's actually something reviewers are doing differently right now on new reviews that's causing that?

Or he could mean the older system where you could rate the Story, Animation, Sound, Character and Enjoyment........

That's interesting, how long ago was that? I've been here since 2011 and that must have been before my time. I've seen a lot of people rate those things in an ad-hoc fashion, was it once an actual system?

No, this was still around until just a bit ago. You had to click on the hyperlinked "Overall Rating" to see it.

I think its reasonable to have an overall rank or puntuation (10, 5 or 7 for an anime). In most of the reviews, i do think theres a lot of quality there and also you can see whether it contains spoiler or not, so that makes you easy to select which ones to read (before & after). By implementing a system that said " you need to evaluate in base on this criteria" in fact you are forcing people to adapt to that system. What we have now has more freedom, everyone can put his own personal opinion without thiking to much in all the things (art, staff, style of direction, music), i mean you could also add a lot of other features.

The only thing i see is to implement a Highly Recommend for (9-10) or just another like: I would not watch it again I  maybe would watch it again I would watch it again definetely.

I get your sentiment here, but what if it was optional to fill it out?

What is the purpose of a review? I think it's double.
On the one hand, offer information to those who have not seen the series in case it may interest them.
On the other hand, evaluate and give arguments for why it is a good or bad series.
This last point is the one that generates the most discussion. How is an anime evaluated? It is not that simple, there are many opinions about it. Considering the previous,
(1) until there is a broader discussion involving almost all members of the AnimeList platform and an agreement is reached on the best system for evaluating an anime,
(2) Criteria cannot be set for reviews, because they would imply just that, that the best way to do it has already been decided.
Having said the above, I recommend that the reviews that are made or the debates about the animes be made based on objective criteria as far as possible. There are many anime that we like and yet we know that they are not masterpieces. There are many anime that we don't like and yet they are good anime. Subjectivity is implicit.
But criteria, such as art, music, characters, etc., are good criteria to be able to hold a debate. The problem is that subjective and personal opinion is often ahead of that rational judgment. In such a way that these elements are used precisely to support the previous subjective judgment. So it wouldn't "be 100% objective" either.
In conclusion, I think it's better that everyone values the anime as they want, and the reviews that have the most likes will (hopefully) be those that offer the best arguments. On the other hand, this option does not hurt anyone and gives more freedom for more opinions to be offered. If it is optional, you have the problem of 1) what criteria are considered and 2) it implies a recognition that this is the best way of evaluating. In any case, I imagine that the platform will have its own policy in this regard.
