Synopsis

Ever since the death of his father, the burden of supporting the family has fallen upon Tanjirou Kamado's shoulders. Though living impoverished on a remote mountain, the Kamado family are able to enjoy a relatively peaceful and happy life. One day, Tanjirou decides to go down to the local village to make a little money selling charcoal. On his way back, night falls, forcing Tanjirou to take shelter in the house of a strange man, who warns him of the existence of flesh-eating demons that lurk in the woods at night.

When he finally arrives back home the next day, he is met with a horrifying sight—his whole family has been slaughtered. Worse still, the sole survivor is his sister Nezuko, who has been turned into a bloodthirsty demon. Consumed by rage and hatred, Tanjirou swears to avenge his family and stay by his only remaining sibling. Alongside the mysterious group calling themselves the Demon Slayer Corps, Tanjirou will do whatever it takes to slay the demons and protect the remnants of his beloved sister's humanity.

"Demon Slayer" has gained immense popularity and acclaim in the anime community, but I must admit that I find it to be a rather mediocre anime, lacking the depth and originality that defines a truly outstanding series.

One of the main issues I have with "Demon Slayer" is its painfully predictable plot. The story follows the typical Shonen formula, where the protagonist embarks on a quest to avenge his family and eradicate demons. This trope has been done countless times before, and "Demon Slayer" fails to bring anything refreshing or innovative to the table. The lack of narrative surprises and plot twists made the journey feel ... bland and uninteresting.

Another aspect that detracts from the overall quality of the anime is the underdeveloped and one-dimensional characters. While the main protagonist, Tanjiro, displays moments of determination and resilience, the rest of the cast falls short in terms of characterization. Many of the supporting characters seem more like archetypes rather than fully fleshed-out individuals with depth and complexity. Consequently, it becomes challenging to form a genuine emotional connection with them, which is crucial in any compelling story.

Furthermore, the pacing of the anime feels inconsistent. At times, the story progresses rapidly, leaving minimal time for meaningful character development or exploration of the demon-slaying world. Conversely, certain episodes drag on, sacrificing momentum and failing to maintain the audience's engagement. This imbalance in pacing hinders the overall flow of the narrative and diminishes the impact of critical moments.

Additionally, the animation, while visually appealing in some instances, isn't consistently impressive throughout the series. Certain fight scenes may be well-animated, but the overall animation quality feels inconsistent, especially in terms of character design and movement. As an avid anime viewer, I believe that consistent and high-quality animation is crucial in immersing the audience in the story, and "Demon Slayer" falls short in this aspect.

While "Demon Slayer" undoubtedly has its merits, such as its beautiful artwork and exceptional soundtrack, these aspects alone cannot redeem the anime from its fundamental flaws. It fails to deliver a compelling and original story, the characters lack depth, the pacing is inconsistent, and the animation quality is not always up to par.

In conclusion, "Demon Slayer" may have garnered a significant following, but I believe it is far from being a good anime. Its lack of originality, underdeveloped characters, inconsistent pacing, and occasionally lackluster animation prevent it from standing out in a genre filled with far superior offerings.

Back in 2019 no one could even imagine how popular Demon Slayer would be. Its popularity had gradually grown reaching the peak with the movie making more money than any Japanese film. The hype surrounding the franchise is so massive, that it started to put off some people including myself. But playing this childish game have become boring and I reckon not watching something isn't a thing one should be proud of. Nevertheless, it doesn't mean that Demon Slayer or any other extremely popular show is impeccable and doesn't deserve criticism. At that, I definitely don't regret having delayed watching DS.

The story in the first ... episodes is pretty fast paced. First, the premise is packed into the first episode. Tanjiro goes to the city to do some errands, but on his way back home he discovers that his entire family excluding his sister has been murdered by demons. On top of that, the sister became a demon and turning her back into human is Tanjiro's main target. He finds the people who can help him in the next episode, followed by the third episodes that consists only of training in order to become a demon slayer.

The story in battle shonen isn't the strongest, but DS uses the story as a rope just to tied up the battle sequences. The victory in every battle is accompanied by the notification of a task he must accomplish next. Sometimes there are breaks between battles, but I don't know what differentiates them from fillers. They have next to zero character exposition or character development. In addition to restoring the humanity of his sister, Tanjiro wants to retaliate against Muzan and also prevent catastrophes similar to his own.

And that describes the main character. He is kind, warm-hearted, cordial, thinks of others more than himself. The other characters are also stereotypical. I wouldn't complain, if they weren't irritating. Zenitsu is the most remarkable one. It feels his personality was took from SpongeBob or other Nickelodeon cartoon and put into this show. Despite the villains, who are also quite flat and just wish to conquer the world, Zenitsu was the only character whose death I were coveting. The main cast is so irksome, so when a character who just act normal is introduced you immediately fall in love with them. Conversely, Inosuke is a single character, that has some development and has become slightly more palatable.

The animation is the only aspect, that was put on a pedestal by anyone: haters or fans; and it would be disappointing if it was exaggerated. Maybe it held true in 2019, but definitely not nowadays. There were glaring pieces of CG that were used for crowds, for separated characters, as a part of environment, or as entire locations and it is done a little bit better than average. However, there was good application of CG during fight scenes or scenes with high speed camera movements. The fight scenes are mostly directed halfheartedly. Battles consist of Tanjiro's dodging of enemies' attacks and killing them with a single blow. And this is a moment when the end of episode 19 comes into play. But it was the climax of the fight, the fight by itself was far and away better than any other ones. It was like a high school project where everyone have diligently done their job: the music, choreography, CG, combination of abilities, lighting ( that's also good beyond this fight ). The only gripe is Tanjiro's new ability that appears after his flashback, but it's a jab toward the plot.

The ost is pretty good, especially the chorus tracks. The sound effects are usually low-key in media, but I would like to point out juicy sounds of flying balls and mutilation of demons. The OP and ED are just decent in comparison, but it attributes to all LISA's songs.

I really liked the first episodes, but the more I had been watching the more flaws I had been noticed. The direction that stretches out the episodes by the use of repeated scenes, the irksome characters, the loosely directed fight scenes don't contribute to enjoyment. Yes, it has episode 19, but is it enough to compensate everything else? I think the word "inconsistency" fits better than "compensation". There were moments that disappointed me on a par with the moments that fascinated me.

The narrative is overly cautious and underperforms in numerous areas, exhibiting a linear moral perspective among its characters that is too simplistic.
